Rashmi Shukla Becomes Maharashtra’s First Female Director General of Police
In a historic decision, the state government of Maharashtra has named Rashmi Shukla, a distinguished officer of the 1988 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS), as the Director General of Police (DGP). This marks a momentous occasion as Ms. Shukla becomes the first female officer to assume charge as Maharashtra DGP position in the state.
A look at Rashmi Shukla’s Life Journey to Become Maharashtra’s First Female DGP
Ms. Shukla’s ascent to the apex of the police hierarchy has been both remarkable and tumultuous. Stepping into the shoes of her 1988 IPS cadre batchmate, Rajnish Seth, who recently retired and assumed the role of chairman of the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC), she now holds the reins of the police force.
Previously Hold Responsibilities by Rashmi Shukla
Prior to her current role, Ms. Rashmi Shukla successfully led the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and served as the Additional Director-General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
However, controversy shadowed her during her tenure as the Commissioner of the State Intelligence Department (SID) under the Devendra Fadnavis-led government. Accusations of unauthorized phone tapping of leaders from the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition tarnished her reputation, resulting in her being named in two out of three FIRs filed against her.
The Road to Redemption
The political landscape in Maharashtra underwent a transformation, particularly after the downfall of the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government in June 2022, creating an opportunity for Ms. Shukla’s resurgence. The newly formed government led by Eknath Shinde, in alliance with the BJP and others, turned the tide in her favor.
An Anticipated Extension?
As her retirement looms at the end of June, speculation surrounds the possibility of the State government granting an extension, enabling Ms. Shukla to extend her service beyond the typical retirement age.
Personal Challenges
Born in Mumbai in August 1965, Ms. Shukla’s personal life has been marked by adversity. The loss of her husband, Uday Shukla, also an IPS officer, to oesophageal cancer occurred during her tenure as the Pune Commissioner of Police. Her journey, characterized by professional accomplishments and personal hardships, stands as a testament to resilience and unwavering dedication in public service.
Rashmi Shukla’s historic appointment as Maharashtra’s first female DGP signifies not only a personal milestone but a significant stride in enhancing the representation of women in senior law enforcement roles. Her career, encapsulating both commendable service and controversial episodes, mirrors the intricate and challenging landscape of policing in contemporary India.
