State Policy for Transgenders 2017 was approved by the state cabinet of Karnataka aiming to stop the social and sexual exploitation of transgender community.

The transgender policy has been prepared as per in compliance with a Supreme Court order and will help to bring the community into the mainstream as well as it will make them feel more secure.
The transgender policy contains various categories of transgenders including jogappa, jijra, female to male, male to female, inter-sex, kothis, jogtas, shivashakti and aravanis.
It will work to create more awareness regarding transgender community at all educational institutions of the state as well as it will make easy to reach out to family members through Anganwadi workers to sensitise them about trans-children.
A monitoring committee or cell at educational institutions to address discrimination problems, sexual abuse and violence against transgenders will be constituted under the State Policy for Transgenders 2017.
Transgender will be included into government initiatives like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Right to Education and similar efforts to promote literacy.
The policy also includes reservations for transgenders in all levels of education and establishing special redressal cells for harassment and discrimination cases against them.

Back in year 2015, the Apex court had given the status of third gender to transgenders. As the number of transgenders in India as per India census 2011 are 4,87,803. Out of this Karnataka alone has 20,266 transgenders.
