Australia took a major decision step today by abolishing a visa programme named as 457 visa. This visa is used by over 95,000 temporary foreign workers. Most of these workers are from India.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told that they have done this to tackle the growing unemployment among Australians. The 457 visa programme will now be replaced by another visa programme, having new limitations.
What is 457 Visa?
The 457 visa programme, allows foreign workers to work for businesses for a period up to four years in skilled jobs where there is a shortage of Australian workers.
India tops the list of most 457 visa holders, followed by the United Kingdom and China.
Australia would adopt a new ‘Australians first’ approach to skilled migration.
