India has now become world’s 2nd largest importer of LPG. Earlier this position was captured by Japan. As per the data of oil ministry’s Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell, during the Financial Year 2016-17, There is considerable rise in India’s LPG import by 23% whereas Japan’s import slipped 3.2% for the same period. China at the top of the list of largest LPG importers.
This is the result of PM Modi’s pledge to provide gas cylinders to poor household at very cheaper prices. Reducing the air pollution was one another reason behind starting this scheme. The scheme was started by PM in 2016 to reduce dependence of extremely poor households on polluting fuels like wood, cow and buffalo’s dunk.
As per data statistics from WHO (World Health Organization) these polluting fuels causes 1.3 million premature deaths every year in India.
