ISRO-BHEL Signs Technology Transfer Agreement (TTA) for manufacturing of space grade Li-Ion cells. The agreement was signed between two organizations at ISRO’s headquarter in Bengaluru. Dr. K. Sivan, Chairman, ISRO and Mr. Atul Sobti, Chairman & Managing Director, BHEL were were present at the the time of signing agreement.
Where ISRO uses Li-Ion batteries?
Li-Ion batteries are used by ISRO as a power source for satellite and launch vehicle applications. These batteries contain high energy density, reliability and long cycle life which is why ISRO used them as a source of power.
Space grade Li-ion cell
The technology to produce space grade Li-ion cells is already developed by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) of ISRO at Thiruvananthapuram. All related demonstrations and performance tests have also been done successfully by VSSC. These cells are used in various satellite and launch vehicle applications.
Through ISRO-BHEL Technology Transfer Agreement (TTA), Bharat Heavy Electronic limited will be able to produce space grade Li-Ion cells for India’s pace programme requirements. The technology will also be used for producing Li-Ion cells for other energy related needs of India.
