Kolkata is going to get India’s first underwater metro at Hoobly. It will be constructed 30 metres below the riverbed. The tunnel work is almost complete with some work of second one pending. The tunnel is just a few metres away from the Howrah bridge connecting Howrah and Kolkata.
The tunnel is even more special because it is first of its kind because till now even no roads built like this. So it can be called a complete technology masterpiece as far as India is concerned.
Howrah and sealdah through which almost 10 to 12 lakh passengers pass on daily basis will be connected through this tunnel. The special types of tunnel boring machines called “earth pressure balancing tunnel boring machines” are used for costruction.
