Senior most Election Commissioner Om Prakash Rawat was elevated as new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) this Monday. Rawat took the charge from current Chief Election Commissioner A.K. Joti retired on 22/01/2018 this week. The appointment of Prakash rawat was done by Union Law Ministry.
Prakash Rawat will hold the CEC position for approximate one year as he will get retired in December this year. There are elections in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland next month which will be held under the supervision of Rawat. Along with that, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chattisgarh elections will also happen within this year during the tenure of Parkash Rawat.
The vacant position of Election Commissioner after Mr Rawat’s elevation will now be taken by Former Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa.
About Prakash Rawat
Rawat is a Madhya Pradesh cadre IAS officer. During his career, he has served in many departments such as secretary, Department of Public Enterprises in the Ministry of Heavy Industries. He has also served as principal secretary to MPs former Chief Minister, Sh Babu Lal Gaur in years between 2004 and 2006.
Education of Prakash Rawat: He has passed Social Development Planning (Post graduate Degree) in the year 1989 from United Kingdom (UK).
