India’s double Olympic Gold medallist Sushil Kumar made a strong return to international wrestling as he won gold medal at Commonwealth Wrestling Championships being held in Johannesburg of South Africa on Sunday December 17, 2017.
Sushil had made a comeback to international wrestling after a gap of three years in the month of November by participating in Senior Nationals in Indore where he won a gold medal. It also created controversy at that time as three of his fellow wrestlers gave him walkovers. But the champion proved all wrong and shown his great strength at Commonwealth Wrestling Championships.
This is Sushil Kumar’s first international medal in wrestling since he won gold in Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014. Sushil Kumar’s fight was with New Zealand Akash Khullar to whom Sushil defeated via a pinfall in the final of the 74kg freestyle category to clinch the yellow metal.
Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik also shown her good strength and won gold medal in the championships. She also defeated New Zealand’s Tayla Tuahine Ford with a margin of 13-2 in the final of the 62kg women’s freestyle category.
It was double celebration moment for India as Parveen Rana another Indian wrestler in the same category won bronze medal.
