Tamil Nadu has emerged as top Indian state with highest education enrolment. The state got Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education as per the survey reports released by Minister of Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar on last Friday. Below are main points of the All India Survey on Higher Education report (2106-2017):
Tamil Nadu got GER of 46.9% and leads the states. The state has also performed well in terms of male and female GER figures and also in the GER figures for the Scheduled Castes with GER 38% (Highest). In terms of female GER (45.6%), Tamil Nadu is just behind UTs Delhi and Chandigarh. But the Tamil Nadu has left behind UTs also in terms of male GER (48.2%).
In terms of Union territories, it was beautiful city Chandigarh that lead the list with GER of 56.1%.
In terms of states with lowest GER percentage Bihar got the bottom place with 14.4% GER. Bihar was followed by Assam, West Bengal and Odisha with GER of 17.2%, 18.5% and 21% respectively. However Uttar Pradesh shown some improvement and managed to reach 24.9% which is just below the national average of 25.2%.
As per the report all-India GER has shown little more than 2% improvement as compared to 2014. In 2014, GER was 23% and as of now it is 25.2%. Government is hoping to achieve a GER target of 30% till 2022. Below is the data for last 7 terms in percent:
- 2010-11 – 19.4 percent
- 2011-12 – 20.8 percent
- 2012-13 – 21.5 percent
- 2013-14 – 23 percent
- 2014-15 – 24.3 percent
- 2015-16 – 24.5 percent
- 2016-17 – 25.2 percent
