It seems that West Bengal government is also planning to win rural people heart in order to register victory in upcoming panchayat elections in state. So the government has decided to provide Rs 2,700 crore to widen and renovate 3,000km of rural roads.
Rural connectivity in the state is in bad conditions in most parts of West Bengal. Earlier it was Zilla Parishad which was maintaining roads in the state and the roads are not in good condition so the road renovation charge has been taken over by the state public works department recently on the instructions of the chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
The work to renovate rural rods in West Bengal is expected to be started in next March. Under the work the department will work on widening the roads from existing 3m to new width of 5 m. The estimated cost to develop each kilometre of road is expected to be Rs 90 lakh. But the budget is the problem for the project as the project did not have any budgetary allocation for it.
