What is Iceberg?
Icebergs are big pieces of ice normally separated from glaciers. They are made by freshwater. These normally float freely in ocean or lake water. These vary in shape and sizes. Some are even as bigger as of a size of a small country. They are broken pieces from glaciers. After got separation from glaciers, iceberg starts floating on water.
Iceberg Facts
The naming of icebergs is as per their size. Smaller known as bergy bits and growlers. These are very dangerous for ships and boats as they can come in their paths. These are difficult to spot. Icebergs are generally covered with ice. That is why their color is white. They can also have colors like green, blue, yellow, black, striped or rainbow.
Why Iceberg Floats?
Iceberg is made of pure ice(freshwater). The density of pure ice 920 kg/m J3 (57 lb/cu ft) is less than that of sea water about 1,025 kg/m3 (64 lb/cuft). This is the reason why iceberg float on water. As per the observations, one tenth of the volume of iceberg is above water.
Most Existing Icebergs
The North Atlantic and the cold waters surrounding Antarctica are home to most of the icebergs on Earth.
